Do not send us confidential information before we have agreed to represent you
Until a written agreement is signed, anything you send us may not be protected as a confidential communication, and we may already represent someone with interests adverse to yours. Send us enough to let us evaluate whether we can help, and hold the rest until we have spoken.
Texas law changes
The Texas Legislature meets every two years and changes the statutes on this site every session. Several of the laws described here were rewritten effective 1 September 2025. Courts also decide cases that change what a statute means without changing a word of its text.
Every statute and case linked on a substantive page was read at its primary source before the page was published. Texas statutes change every legislative session and case law is constantly changing, so if you are reading a page long after it was published, confirm anything you intend to act on before you rely on it.
Where a question is unsettled in Texas, these pages say so rather than picking the answer that would be more encouraging.
Deadlines are the reason not to wait
Texas limitations periods for these claims range from two years to thirty years depending on the specific offense, the specific claim and the identity of the defendant, and some of the shortest deadlines apply to the claims people assume they have the longest to bring. A deadline that passes cannot be reopened because a website was out of date. If a deadline may be running, speak to a lawyer now rather than after you have finished reading.
